Paceracer Bespoke Watches

We shine a light on some of Aotearoa's best and brightest.

In an age when most of us simply swipe our phones to get the time, what role does a watch, let alone a bespoke one often costing a few thousand dollars, play?

For Brett Band, founder of Paceracer, NZ’s only bespoke watchmaking company, his watches do so much more than just tell the time. “Paceracer watches are not only functional, but when made specially for someone, they become part of their life. Something they are forever connected to” he says.

An industrial designer by trade, having worked on everything from taps to electric motorbikes, Brett woke up one day and decided that he wanted to make time to do more of what he loved. This, interestingly, included tinkering with classic mechanical watch mechanisms. “I realised I still had a love for design but my real obsession was in the precision and craftsmanship of manufacturing,” he says.

“Having something elegant and versatile that you can wear everyday is Paceracer’s philosophy. 3 Wise Men totally nail it with this idea too. I can wear their clothes anytime, to work and out – as well as at home."

Seven years later, Brett now offers a curated range of proudly locally-made, hand-crafted watches, as well as a fully bespoke service, all from his well- equipped central Auckland workshop. It’s also just across the road from Victoria Park and the skatepark – Brett’s other great love.

He was a sponsored skateboarder in his younger days, travelling the world. “I met some amazing people who worked hard but had fun doing it. They inspire me every day. Honestly, being in my workshop with my dog Whittaker, (yes, named after Brett’s favourite chocolate) is my happy place.”

Each custom watch starts with conversations, inspiration images and sketches, followed by design & engineering R&D, before parts are made, metals polished, dials engineered, gemstones set, then the final assembly.

The best part? “Watching the reaction of the client the first time they see their finished watch. Often it draws a tear or two, as they’re often for once-in-a- lifetime celebrations,” says Brett.

And with plenty of bespoke commissions on the go, there are lots of opportunities to continue this undeniably successful philosophy.
